About Bob Payton
I’m a self-taught visual artist, folk musician, recreation therapist and avid bicyclist. I’ve been designing contemporary art quilts for 15 years, and I’m still learning. My hope is these vibrant artworks will enliven spaces and bring playful creative energy to viewers of all ages!
Pedal Pusher Gallery
This is a fun way to display art around the Minneapolis. Thanks to my spouse Denise for designing and building the bike gallery from an Ikea Sladda bike trailer. View Pedal Pusher Gallery Quilts.
About THE QUILTS
All my art quilts lack descriptive titles in order for each viewer to discover their own interpretations. The works are cataloged using Greek letters.
Making the quilts is like composing free-form music. It’s improvisational collage using colors, shapes, lines and patterns. I find this freestyle way of doing art extremely engaging, imaginative and just plain fun!
My design process is experimental and intuitive. Beginning with a blank square of cotton cloth pinned to an easel, I cut and affix fabric pieces, building up layers while keeping an eye on color, balance and motion. At a certain point I sew on a frame-like border, which becomes an integral part of the piece, and finally complete the work with layers of batting and backing, all quilted together to create depth and texture.
Arts in Healthcare
Creating art is also a visceral response to my challenging work as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist helping hospital patients cope with complex and serious medical conditions.
